Search Tips

Simple and Advanced Search Options

The Simple Search allows you to search by feature and keyword.

Advanced Search offers more options. You can use the Advanced Search to:

  • Search for more than one feature.
  • Search for images by date.
  • Search for only Sunday images.
  • Select the way your search results are displayed.

Keyword

  • The keyword search will look in the dialog, caption, description, and category fields.
  • Use AND, OR, AND NOT between keywords. Examples: snow AND rain will find images with BOTH words in the dialog and/or caption text. adam AND NOT laura would find images that contained "adam" in either dialog, caption, or character, but that did not contain "laura" in any of those fields.
  • Wildcard searches: Use an asterisk ( * ) after the first few letters of a word to find all variations of that word. Examples: graduat* will find graduate, graduates, or graduation. snow* will find snow, snowy, snowman, snows, snowing.

Topic

All images in the AMU Reprints system have been assigned at least one of the topic terms from the following list:

  • Agriculture
  • Animals
  • Art
  • Books
  • Buildings & architecuture
  • Business & Economy
  • Clothing & Fashion
  • Communication Methods
  • Education
  • Emotions & Mental States
  • Entertainment
  • Food
  • Furnishings
  • Gifts
  • Health & Medicine
  • Hobbies & Handicrafts
  • Home & Garden
  • Hunting & Fishing
  • Law & Legal Issues
  • Literature
  • Media
  • Military
  • Music
  • Nature
  • Occupations & Employment
  • Organizations
  • People
  • Politics & Government
  • Relationships
  • Religion
  • Science
  • Social Issues
  • Special Events
  • Sports & Recreation
  • Supernatural
  • Symbols
  • Technology
  • Time
  • Toys
  • Traditions & Customs
  • Travel & Transportation

To search by topic, either select one or more topic terms from the list, or enter one or more topic terms in the keyword search box. You can combine topic terms with other keywords, such as dialog or caption text. For example, to find images related to the economy which also mention Alan Greenspan, you could use this as a search query: economy and greenspan.

Image Descriptions: The keyword search also looks in image descriptions. The descriptions contain more detail about each image and make it possible to find images that didn't contain any dialog. For example, even though the term terrorism is not in the list of topic terms, it will appear in the description of any image that relates to that subject.

Date / Date Range

The dates in this archive refer to domestic (U.S.) syndication dates — meaning the date that the image was released to newspapers. An image may have more than one release date. You can search for either the original release date, or on any subsequent release date.

To locate an image with a specific release date, enter the same date in both the from and to fields.

Search Results Display Options

View Images by Default: Select this option if you want to see comic images in the search results. This option is recommended only if you have a fast connection to the Internet.

View Text Summaries Only: Select this option if you have a slow connection to the Internet (e.g. dial-up). The dialog and caption text of images will display in the search results, and you can decide which images you wish to view.

Retrieve Sunday Comics Only: Select this option if you wish to limit your search to only Sunday comics.

Viewing Results of your Search

Results are displayed ten per "page"; to view the next ten images, use the navigation buttons in the upper right area of the screen.

Images are displayed by order of relevance; in other words, the images that best match your search query will be towards the top of the list.

The simple search displays the text from an image; this may be either dialog, caption, or a description depending on the image content. Click on View Image to see the image on screen (the image will appear in a new browser window).

If you selected the View Images by Default option on the Advanced Search screen, you can click on any image to see more information about the image.
